지난 8일 최재형 보은군수와 보은군의회 윤대성 의장은 ‘청주공항 민간 전용 활주로 건설, 서명운동 동참’표어를 들고 릴레이 캠페인에 참여했다.

최 군수는 “청주공항 확충은 보은의 관광자원과 직결되는 중요한 인프라”라며 “외부 관광객 유입 확대가 지역 경제에 활력을 줄 것”이라고 강조했다.

보은군은 속리산 국립공원과 말티재 등 수려한 자연경관과 유네스코 세계문화유산 법주사 등 역사 문화 자원을 갖춘 충북 대표 관광지로 수도권·영남권 모두에서 접근성이 뛰어난 지역이다.

보은군은 청주공항에서 차량 기준 약 50분 거리로 민간 전용 활주로가 확충되면 외국인 관광객과 단체 여행 수요까지 유입할 수 있는 교통 기반이 마련될 것으로 기대된다.

윤대성 의장은 “군의회는 지역의 관광 경쟁력 제고를 위해 청주공항 활성화에 뜻을 함께하겠다”며 “청주공항의 민간 활주로 건설이 보은 관광 발전과 연결되길 바란다”고 밝혔다.

최재형 보은군수는 “청주공항 활주로 건설은 보은 관광의 외연을 넓히는 중요한 시작점이 될 것”이라며 “보은의 아름다운 자연환경이 세계와 이어져 세계인들이 찾아오는 관광명소가 되길 바란다”고 말했다. 

한편, 청주공항 활주로 건설을 위한 100만 서명운동은 6월 말까지 진행되며, 충청북도는 시·군, 의회 등과 릴레이 캠페인을 이어가며 공감대 확산에 주력하고 있다.
