【충북 브레이크뉴스】임창용 기자=청주시는 상당구 지북정수장 소독설비를 친환경 소독제인 차아염소산나트륨(이하 차염) 설비로 교체하는 공사가 순항 중이라고 9일 밝혔다.

이번 사업은 수돗물 공급과정의 안전성을 높이기 위해 총사업비 9억8천여만원을 투입해 추진하는 것으로, 현재 지북정수장에서 사용하고 있는 액화염소 소독설비는 용기 운반과 교체 작업 때 누출 우려가 있다. 

정부도 2015년부터 액화염소를 사고 대비 물질로 분류하고 점검 등 규제를 강화해오고 있는 실정이다.

차염은 염소보다 취급이 용이하고, 수영장 등에서도 많이 이용할 만큼 안전하다. 냄새와 상수도관 부식 정도도 적어 깨끗한 수돗물을 안전하게 가정집까지 공급할 수 있다는 장점이 있다.

이에 시는 보다 안전한 차염 설비로 교체하기 위해 지난 3월 착공했으며, 오는 7월까지 준공하고 8월부터 시험 운전을 진행할 계획이다.

시 관계자는 “차염 설비를 도입하면 보다 안전하게 고품질의 수돗물 생산이 가능할 것”이라고 설명했다.
