【충북 브레이크뉴스】임창용 기자=보은군은 불화장 이수자 수불회의 기획초대전이 부처님 오신 날을 맞이해 법주사 성보박물관에서 ‘틔움 - 불화 : 전통과 현대를 잇다’라는 주제로 7월 31일까지 진행된다고 밝혔다. 

기획초대전에는 국가무형문화재 불화장 수산(樹山) 임석환 보유자를 비롯한 수불회 소속 8명 작가의 불화 및 불상이 선보일 예정이다. 

이번 기획전시 주제인 ‘틔움’은 전통의 맥을 잇는 최전선에 서 있는 수불회가 언뜻 단절돼 보이는 전통불화와 현대불화 사이의 심리적 물꼬를 트고자 하는 의미를 담고 있다.

전통불화는 임석환 불화장의 ‘수월관음도’를 비롯해 이채원 전승교육사 및 이경동, 채윤지, 일오스님, 법인스님, 강희정 이수자의 ‘영산회괘불’, ‘약사여래불상’, ‘삼세불회도’ 등 작품을 통해 전통 재료와 기법의 정수를 선보인다. 

현대불화에서는 신진환, 이주현 이수자가 ‘우주 속으로’, ‘Enlightment’ 등의 작품을 선보이며 현대불화가 나아갈 방향을 제시한다.

2019년 설립된 수불회(樹佛會)는 국가무형유산 불화장 임석환 보유자의 제자 중 이수자들로 구성된 불교미술 단체로 전통은 전통대로 이어가며 다양한 대중에게 친숙하게 다가갈 수 있는 현대적인 불화를 모색해 왔다.

임석환 보유자는 2006년 국가무형유산 불화장에 지정된 이래 제자 양성에 힘써 2025년 현재 16명의 국가공인 이수자를 배출했으며 이들 제자들은 불교미술 각계에 진출해 활약하고 있다.

그 중 8인이 마음을 모아 스승의 당호인 수산(樹山)에서 ‘수(樹)’를 받아 부처님 나무를 심는 사람들이라는 뜻의 수불회를 결성해 가르침을 이어나가고 있다.

아울러 이번 초대전에서는 이주현 이수자의 ‘귀면그리기’ 체험 프로그램도 함께 진행될 예정이다. 불화에 대한 전반적인 이론 강의와 비단 부채에 불화기법으로 직접 귀면을 그려보는 실습으로 오는 4일 오전, 오후 20명씩 참여가 가능하고 법주사 누리집에서 신청할 수 있다.

이혜영 문화관광과장은 “전통의 명맥을 잇는 동시에 현대에 요구되는 다양한 불화가 성보박물관에 전시된다”며 “많은 분들이 방문하셔서 불화의 색채에 매료되는 시간이 됐으면 한다”고 말했다.

The special exhibition will feature Buddhist paintings and Buddhist statues by eight artists from Subulhoe, including National Intangible Cultural Heritage Buddhist Cremation Master Lee Su-san (樹山) Lim Seok-hwan.
