이번 행사는‘행복을 바라봄, 일상을 담아봄, 희망을 이어봄’이라는 구호에 맞춰 장애인에 대한 이해도를 높이고 장애인의 사회참여 인식을 개선하고자 마련됐다.

행사는 충주시지체장애인총연합회(회장 엄창수)가 주최하고, 충주시장애인협의회와 장애인의 날 추진위원회(공동위원장 엄창수·홍석주)가 공동 주관했으며, 장애인 당사자와 돌봄 종사자 등 1,000여 명이 참석했다.

현대엘리베이터 ‘오르락 합창단’의 식전공연을 시작으로 기념식에서는장애인 인권 헌장 낭독과 장애인 복지증진에 기여한 57명의 유공자에게 표창이 수여됐다.

또한 충주시 장애인 후원회(회장 박용창)는 장애 학생 7명에게 총 350만 원의 장학금을 전달하며 뜻깊은 나눔의 시간을 가졌다.

이날 야외 점심 식사는 자원봉사자의 배식 지원과 더불어 휠체어 이용 장애인을 위한 전용 식사 공간을 마련하는 등 세심한 배려와 안전 관리에 주력했다. 

2부 행사에서는 ‘트래블러크루’ 비보이댄스 공연, 해피데이발달장애인주간보호센터와 장애인부모연대의 공연과 장기자랑이 펼쳐지며 시민이 하나 되는 화합의 장이 열렸다.

부대행사로는 장애인 인식개선을 위한 작품전시, 충주소방서의 심폐소생술 체험, 장애인 권익 활동 캠페인, 장애 체험 및 장애인스포츠 체험과 장애인 보장구 무상 수리 등 다양한 체험 부스 운영으로 ‘장애인의 날’ 의미를 되새기고 즐길 거리가 풍성한 행사 등 호응을 얻었다.

엄창수 회장은 “제45회 장애인의 날을 맞아, 장애인들의 권리와 존엄성이 더욱 존중받는 사회로 나아가기를 바라며, 함께 만들어 가는 지역사회에서 장애인들이 차별 없이 평등한 기회를 가질 수 있도록 노력하겠다.”라고 말했다.
