【충북 브레이크뉴스】임창용 기자=충북 단양군이 유네스코 세계지질공원으로 공식 지정되며, 대한민국을 대표하는 자연유산 도시로서의 위상을 다시 한 번 입증했다.

군에 따르면, 프랑스 파리에서 현지시간으로 10일 오후 11시에 열린 제221차 유네스코 집행이사회에서 단양군 전역(약 781.06㎢)이 유네스코 세계지질공원으로 최종 승인됐다.

이로써 단양은 충청권 최초이자 국내 여섯 번째 유네스코 세계지질공원이 되었으며, 세계적으로 그 가치를 인정받는 지질 유산의 도시로 자리매김하게 됐다.

유네스코 세계지질공원은 지질학적 가치는 물론, 심미적·문화적·역사적 요소를 두루 갖춘 지역을 보호하고, 지속 가능한 발전을 도모하기 위해 유네스코가 지정하는 제도다.

이번 집행이사회에서는 단양을 비롯해 경북 동해안, 북한 백두산 등 전 세계 16곳이 새롭게 지정되었으며, 현재 세계지질공원은 총 50개국 229개소에 이르고 있다.

단양은 한국을 대표하는 카르스트 지형, 독특한 구조지질학적 특성, 우수한 자연경관 등을 바탕으로 국제적 주목을 받아왔다. 

특히 13억 년의 시간차를 지닌 지층과 한반도 지체구조 연구의 최적지, 동굴 생성물을 통한 고기후 분석, 지구 대멸종의 흔적 등 지질학적 가치가 풍부한 지역으로 평가받고 있다. 

이번 유네스코 지정은 이러한 과학적·학술적 가치와 지질학적 다양성이 국제적으로 공인된 쾌거다.

아울러 단양군이 2025년 신단양 이주 40주년, 관광특구 지정 20주년을 맞는 해에 이뤄진 성과로, 단양의 역사적 의미와 발전을 더욱 빛내주는 계기가 되었다.

군은 이번 세계지질공원 지정을 계기로 내륙 최대 관광지로의 도약을 준비하고 있다.

국내외 관광객 유치 확대와 함께, 다양한 지질관광 상품과 체험 프로그램, 소규모 수학여행 및 기업연수 프로그램을 운영하며 지역 특성을 반영한 교육 콘텐츠도 본격적으로 활성화할 계획이다.

또 문화·역사·고고학·천문·생태 등과 지질을 결합한 융합형 콘텐츠를 개발하고, 세계 각국의 지질공원과 지식·경험을 공유하는 국제 협력을 통해 국내외 학술대회 유치 등 글로벌 경쟁력을 강화할 방침이다.

김문근 단양군수는 “이번 유네스코 지정은 단양이 세계적인 지질 유산 도시로 자리매김하는 전환점이 됐다”며 “앞으로도 체계적인 보전과 지속 가능한 관리를 통해 단양의 가치를 세계에 널리 알릴 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.

한편, 단양 유네스코 세계지질공원은 도담삼봉과 만천하스카이워크, 다리안 연성전단대를 포함해 총 43개 지질 명소로 구성되어 있다.
