이항우 교수는 서울대학교에서 사회학 학사와 석사, 미국 뉴욕 주립대(버팔로)에서 박사를 취득했으며, 2004년부터 충북대학교 사회학과 교수로 재직 중이다. 

이항우 학회장은 취임 인사말에서 “2025년 비판사회학회가 사회학의 다양한 비판 패러다임을 아우르는 학술적 실천을 더욱 발전시키고, 회원들의 학회 결속감과 연구 네트워킹을 한층 더 강화하는 조직 작업에 헌신하겠다”고 말했다.

한편, 비판사회학회는 1984년 한국 사회과학의 비판적 혁신과 진보적 연구를 통한 사회변화를 표방하며 결성된 ‘한국산업사회연구회(산사연)’으로 시작돼 지난 2007년에 ‘비판사회학회’로 개칭하였으며, 2024년 현재 한국을 대표하는 사회학회로서의 위상을 갖고 있다.

In his inaugural address, President Lee Hang-woo said, “In 2025, the Critical Sociology Society will further develop academic practice that embraces various critical paradigms in sociology, and will devote himself to organizational work that further strengthens the solidarity and research networking of its members.” Meanwhile, the Critical Sociology Society began as the ‘Korea Industrial Society Research Association (SSA)’ in 1984, which advocated for social change through critical innovation and progressive research in Korean social sciences, and was renamed the ‘Critical Sociology Society’ in 2007. As of 2024, it has the status of a representative sociological society in Korea.
