충주시는 지역소식지인 월간예성을 통해 5월 화제의 인물로 환경전도사 정명채(75세, 남) 씨와 충주시청소년학교밖지원센터에 근무하는 이영구(52세, 여) 씨를 소개했다.

 

정명채 씨는 40여 년의 세월을 봉방동에서 지낸 토박이 주민으로, 사회 전반의 환경에 대한 관심이 뜨거워지기 훨씬 전부터 청결한 지역사회를 만들기 위해 노력해 오신 분이다.

 

그는 40여 년간 봉방동 내의 공원, 도로변, 공터 등 장소를 가리지 않고 불법쓰레기 수거 활동 등 환경지킴이 활동을 묵묵히 이어왔다.

 

또 겨울철 눈이 내릴 때면 밤낮을 가리지 않고 가장 먼저 나와 제설 작업을 시작하며 이웃들의 안전을 지키는 믿음직한 보호자이기도 하다.

 

특히, 제설작업에 어려움이 많은 장애인 가정에 직접 방문해 눈을 치워주며 주변의 모범이 되기도 했다.

 

정명채 씨는 “환경전도사라는 과분한 이름으로 불러주시지만 남에게 어떻게 해달라고 한 적도 없고, 그저 내가 원해서 한 일을 주변에서 좋게 생각해 주어 감사할 뿐”이라며 “깨끗해진 봉방동을 볼 때마다 누구보다 내가 가장 행복하고 보람차다”고 말했다.

 

충주시청소년학교밖지원센터에서 청소년 멘토로 6년째 재능기부를 하고 있는 이영구 씨는 대학교에서 아동복지학을 전공한 인재다.

충주열린학교, 충주시다문화가족지원센터 등에서 영어, 한글 재능기부로 지역사회의 참된 벗이 되어온 그는 현재 충주시청소년학교밖지원센터에서 사회 선생님으로 활약하고 있다.

 

그는 청소년들의 자존감을 높이고 세상을 볼 수 있는 아름다운 눈을 갖게 하는 일을 가장 중요하게 생각하며, 토론 중심의 자유로운 수업방식으로 청소년들과 진솔한 소통을 나누고자 노력 중이다.

 

아울러, 청소년 상담과 함께 다양한 체험 및 진로 활동도 지원하며 청소년들이 자기 인생의 주인공이 되어 당당하게 자신의 미래를 설계해 나갈 수 있도록 돕고 있다.

 

이영구 씨는 “코로나 때문에 온라인으로밖에 아이들을 만날 수 없는 상황이 안타깝지만, 주어진 환경에서 줄 수 있는 최대한을 전달하려 노력하고 있다”며 “청소년 스스로가 당당한 삶의 주체이자 사회의 일원으로 성장할 수 있도록 우리 어른들이 든든한 디딤돌 역할이 되어주길 바란다”고 말했다.
