올해는 총 1,237명의 학생이 장학금을 신청했으며, 분야별 자격요건과 소득 기준 등을 면밀히 심사한 결과 △우수장학생 755명 △특기장학생 61명 △3자녀 이상 다자녀 장학생 254명 △희망장학생(장애·북한이탈·다문화) 92명 △우수졸업장학생 26명 △난계국악 장학생 2명 등 총 1,190명이 최종 선발됐다.

학생들에게 지급될 장학금은 대학생 150만 원, 고등학생 50만 원, 중학생 40만 원, 초등학생 30만 원, 단체특기팀 120만 원 등 총 9억 9,640만 원으로, 이는 전년 대비 1억 3,030만 원 증액된 금액으로, 지난해보다 78명의 학생이 추가로 지원을 받게 됐다.

2003년 설립된 영동군민장학회는 지역 인재 육성을 목표로 현재까지 7,575명에게 70억 2,816만 원의 장학금을 지원하며 지역 미래 인재 양성에 중추적 역할을 하고 있다.

한편, 이번 장학생 선발은 지난달 28일 군청 상황실에서 열린 제4차 이사회를 통해 확정됐다. 이사회에서는 장학생 선발 안건 외에도 △2025년도 사업계획 변경(안) △2026년 기금운용 및 사업계획(안) 등 총 4건의 안건이 심의·의결됐다.

2026년 기금운용 계획은 △향토장학금 2억 원 △군민장학금 8억 8,550만 원 △장학회 추진사업 11억 7,500만 원 등 총 22억 6,050만 원 규모로 편성됐다. 특히 중학생 해외연수 지역을 기존 두마게티에서 뉴질랜드로 확대하고, 고등학생 해외수학여행 경비 지원사업도 지속 추진된다. 신규사업으로는 유원대학교 통학버스 지원사업이 새롭게 시행될 예정이다.

영동군민장학회 관계자는 “학령인구 감소 시대, 장학제도는 학생 개개인의 성장 단계와 진로에 맞춘 맞춤형 지원 체계로 변화해야 한다”며 “앞으로도 지역 청소년들이 미래 사회의 주역으로 성장할 수 있도록 종합형 장학사업을 적극 추진하겠다”고 밝혔다.
