이번 사업을 통해 군은 지역에서 생산되는 오미자를 선별 없이 전량 수매하고, 산업체 납품과 자체 가공 시설을 연계한 새로운 공급 체계를 구축했다. 

그동안 단양 오미자 농가는 상위 등급 물량은 소매로 판매해 왔으나, 판매하지 못한 물량은 낮은 가격에 중간상인에게 넘길 수밖에 없어 소득 변동성이 컸다. 

그러나 올해 군이 벌천오미자영농조합법인을 통해 ‘선별 없는 전량 수매’ 방식을 도입하면서 판로 불안이 해소됐고 실제 농가 소득도 전년 대비 약 20% 증가한 것으로 나타났다.

농가들은 선별 과정에서의 노동 부담과 스트레스에서 벗어난 점을 가장 큰 변화로 꼽고 있으며, 조합을 통한 외부 납품 확대와 안정적 가격 형성으로 단양 오미자의 가격 교섭력 또한 과거보다 크게 높아졌다는 평가가 나오고 있다. 

올해 벌천오미자영농조합법인은 총 31톤의 오미자를 수매해 이 중 30톤을 산업체에 납품했으며, 남은 1톤은 단양군의 신규 오미자 주스 브랜드 ‘오감오미’ 생산에 활용할 예정이다. 

여기에 더해 군은 자동 생산 체계 구축도 완료해 향후 오미자 가공사업의 고도화와 고부가가치화를 적극 추진한다는 계획이다.

한편, 단양 오미자의 재배 면적은 한때 160ha까지 늘었으나, 고령화와 노동력 부족으로 현재 70ha 수준까지 감소한 상황이다. 

이를 해결하고 생산 기반을 유지하기 위해 군은 기존 아치형 수형을 ‘사리리형’ 수형으로 개선하는 시설 개선 사업을 병행하고 있으며, 올해만 1.8ha의 신규 면적이 조성됐다. 

사다리형 수형 도입으로 노동력 절감과 작업 편의성 향상은 물론 생산량을 약 28% 증가시키는 효과가 기대된다.

군은 내년에도 도비 2억 1천만 원을 확보해 2ha 규모의 신수형 오미자 과원 조성과 무인방제기 보급 등 재배 기반 확충과 노동력 절감 지원을 이어갈 계획이다. 

군 농업기술센터 관계자는 “전량 수매 체계는 농가에게 안정성을, 산업에는 경쟁력을 제공한 결정적 전환점”이라며 “앞으로도 단양 오미자의 브랜드 가치와 시장 경쟁력 확보를 위해 지원을 아끼지 않겠다”고 말했다.
