군은 자연경관과 함께 즐길 수 있는 체험 프로그램을 발굴하고자 지난 2019년 국토교통부 주관 ‘지역 수요 맞춤지원 공모사업’으로 총 51억 원의 사업비(국비 20억 원, 군비 31억 원)를 편성해 장령산 자연휴양림 내 ‘폐철광굴’을 갱도·광차 모형, 소원바위, 소원폭포, 포토존 등이 조성된 ‘숲속동굴’로 재구성하는 중이다.

숲속동굴 사업은 다음 달 준공을 목표로 막바지에 다다랐으며 가족 단위 관광객들이 즐길 수 있는 새로운 관광명소로 선보일 예정이다.

황규철 옥천군수는 “장령산 폐철광굴이 숲속동굴로 새롭게 단장해 관광객들을 맞이할 준비를 하고 있다”며 “장령산자연휴양림을 찾는 관광객들이 안전하게 즐길 수 있도록 마지막까지 최선을 다하겠다”라고 말했다.
