교평리 강줄당기기 행사는 올해가 두 번째이며 정월대보름 때마다 마을의 안녕과 풍년을 기원하고 2024년에 충북도 지정무형유산으로 지정되었다.

올해는 정월대보름인 2월 12일날 행해지는데, 이 행사를 위해 옥천 교평리 강줄당기기 보존회(회장 박기현)는 작년 10월경 강줄당기기의 재료로 사용할 볏짚을 청산면 교평리 일원의 논에서 거둬들였다.

행사는 10시부터 볏집을 꼬는 행사인 강줄드리기를 시작으로 향교 기원제, 교평교 기원제, 강줄태우기 순으로 진행되었다.

한편, 강줄당기기는 볏집을 꽈 만든 용 모양 ‘강줄’을 만든 뒤 윗말과 아랫말이 줄다리기를 하는 방식인데, 윗말이 이기면 풍년이 든다는 속설이 전해진다. 이에따라, 각 마을에서 온 힘을 다해 줄다리기에 참여하나 윗말이 이기는 것이 관행이다. 줄다리기가 끝나고 마지막 고사를 지낸 후 강줄을 태우며 무병장수를 기원한다.
