이날 개관식에는 조길형 충주시장을 비롯해 이시종 충청북도지사, 도의원 시의원, 국내 유네스코 인사, 무예기관 및 단체, 무예 관련 대학교수, 시민대표 등이 참석한 가운데 무예분야에서 충주의 위상을 더욱 높이게 될 국제무예센터의 문을 활짝 열었다.

 

ICM는  충주세계무술공원 내 9,300㎡ 부지에 총사업비 180억원을 들여 연면적 5,736㎡(지하 1층, 지상 3층) 규모로 조성됐다.

 

이곳은 각종 공연과 국제행사를 치를 수 있는 350석 규모의 컨벤션홀, 통역시스템이 갖춰진 150석(관람석 포함) 규모의 국제회의장, 세미나실, 자료실, 무예 단체 사무공간, 야외공연장 등으로 꾸며졌다.

 

충주시는 지난 2013년 11월 프랑스 파리에서 열린 제37차 유네스코 총회에서 세계무술축제 개최지로서 세계무술 발전에 기여한 점이 인정되어 ICM 설립지로 확정됐다.
