Jecheon City, the first SFTS patient in the province... Be mindful of outdoor activity precautions

Caution against tick-borne infectious diseases

-im changyong reporter

While the first case of Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS) occurred in Jecheon this year, the city of Jecheon urged caution against tick-borne infections.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) occurs when a tick infected with a virus accidentally bites a person and the virus enters the body. Since ticks live mainly in farmland such as kitchen gardens and fields near mountains, and thick forests, special care is required when doing outdoor activities.

SFTS usually progresses with digestive symptoms such as fever, nausea, vomiting, and anorexia within 5 to 14 days after agricultural work or outdoor activity. In the case of ticks, it is difficult to identify bite marks and the mortality rate is high at 10-30%, so prevention is the most important thing.

When doing outdoor activities, wear light-colored long clothes and use a neckerchief, gloves, sleeves, and boots to minimize skin exposure. It is good to use tick repellent and spread a mat when taking a break. In particular, you should refrain from resting or taking off your clothes around the grass, and move on a well-maintained path. Take a bath (shower) immediately after returning from the activity, and wash all clothes separately from normal clothes. If any symptoms appear after activities, you should visit a medical institution immediately and receive treatment.

An official from Jecheon City said, "The best preventive measure for this disease is not to be bitten by ticks."
