The Danyang-gun Health Center in Chungcheongbuk-do ranked first among 11 city and county health centers in the province, recording a cumulative vaccination rate of 84.8% for those aged 65 or older.

According to the National Statistical Office, pneumonia is the third leading cause of death in Korea. It has a short incubation period of 1 to 3 days, and is accompanied by sudden high fever and chills, cough with mucous purulent sputum, chest pain, and shortness of breath.

Among pneumococcal diseases, the mortality rate is 60% for bacteremia and 80% for meningitis, and even survivors can leave serious sequelae of 20-30%.

Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent pneumococcal infection, but according to the data from the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the pneumococcal vaccination rate of 65-year-olds in Korea is low at 15.5% (2023).

Accordingly, the county public health center strongly recommended vaccination against pneumococcal infection at the age of 65 to prevent pneumococcal infection and reduce the burden of disease.

Inoculation targets are those aged 65 or older (those born before December 31, 1958) who have not received the pneumococcal 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine (hereinafter referred to as PPSV23), and are provided free once at public health centers and designated medical institutions nationwide.

In the county public health center, inoculation is available from 9:00 am to 11:30 am and 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm every Monday to Friday. , Seoul Samsung Clinic, Youngchun Clinic, and Central Internal Medicine Association Clinic.

Regardless of your address, you can get vaccinated at any public health center or designated medical institution nationwide, and you can check designated medical institutions in other regions on the vaccination helper website.

An official from the public health center said, “Those born in 1958 who are eligible for free vaccination aged 65 years of age are requested to participate in pneumococcal vaccination without fail.” said.

On the other hand, if the protein conjugate vaccine was vaccinated at the age of less than 65 years, one dose of PPSV23 can be given at the age of 65 years or older after 1 year from the previous vaccination date. Re-vaccination can be given once after 5 years from the previous vaccination and at the age of 65 or older.
