【브레이크뉴스 충북】임창용 기자=충북대학교(총장 김수갑) 수의학과 최석화(사진) 교수가 농촌진흥청에서 공모한 '반려동물산업 활성화 핵심기반기술 개발 사업'을 위한 반려동물연구사업단장으로 임용됐다. 임기는 오는 2022년 12월 31일까지다.
반려동물연구사업단은 반려동물의 우수형질 선발 및 집단 안정화 기술 개발과 반려견·묘의 주요 질병 조기진단 및 복지증진 기술을 개발하는 국책연구 사업단이다. 반려동물연구사업단은 농촌진흥청으로부터 매년 56억 2천만 원 규모의 사업비를 지원받으며, 최석화 교수는 사업단장으로서 과제 기획과 선정, 평가, 관리 등을 총괄해 연구를 수행한다.
농촌진흥청에서는 최근 고령화와 1인 가구의 증가, 여가 생활 확대 등에 의해 지속적으로 성장하고 있는 반려동물산업의 관련 핵심 기반 정보 확보 및 국산화 기술 개발의 필요성에 따라 국책연구사업으로 기획했다.
최석화 수의학과 교수는 “국가 신사업으로 성장 가능성이 매우 높은 반려동물 산업의 육성과 국내 반려동물산업의 국제 경쟁력을 강화하여 선진국형 신산업으로 육성시키겠다.”고 포부를 밝혔다.

The Companion Animal Research Project is a national research project that selects excellent traits of companion animals and develops group stabilization technologies, as well as early diagnosis of major diseases of dogs and cats, and development of welfare promotion technologies. The Companion Animal Research Project is supported by the Rural Development Administration with a project cost of 5.62 billion won each year, and Professor Seok-Hwa Choi, as the project manager, conducts research by overseeing project planning, selection, evaluation, and management.
The Rural Development Administration planned it as a national research project in accordance with the need for securing key basic information related to the companion animal industry and developing localization technology, which is continuously growing due to the recent aging, increase in single-person households, and expansion of leisure life.
Professor Choi Seok-hwa of the Department of Veterinary Medicine said, "We will foster the companion animal industry, which has a very high growth potential as a new national business, and strengthen the international competitiveness of the domestic companion animal industry to foster it as an advanced country-type new industry.“
