괴산군은 4일, 충청북도 유형문화유산으로 관리되어 온 ‘각연사 비로전’이 문화재청(국가유산청)의 심의를 거쳐 국가유산 보물로 지정 예고됐다고 밝혔다.

비로전은 보물로 지정된 ‘석조비로자나불좌상’을 주불로 모신 법전으로, 대웅전 동쪽 마당에 남향으로 자리 잡고 있다. 정면 3칸, 측면 3칸 규모의 팔작지붕 다포양식을 갖춘 이 건물은 1648년(인조 26)에 중건되었다는 기록이 남아 있으며, 이후 수차례의 보수를 거쳐 오늘날까지 원형을 잘 유지하고 있다.

특히 학계에서는 비로전의 건축 부재 중 원형주좌 초석, 신방석의 사분원 몰딩, 각형받침 기법 등에서 통일신라시대의 독특한 양식이 확인된 점에 주목하고 있다. 이는 통일신라 시기에 창건된 건물의 부재를 일부 재활용하여 조선 중기에 중건했음을 시사하는 중요한 단서로 평가받는다.

괴산군은 오는 31일까지 각계각층의 의견 수렴 기간을 거친 뒤, 국가유산위원회 최종 심의를 통해 보물 승격 여부가 확정될 예정이라고 설명했다.

괴산군 관계자는 “괴산은 천혜의 자연환경과 뛰어난 풍수적 입지를 바탕으로 불교와 유교 문화유산이 곳곳에 숨 쉬고 있는 고장”이라며 “비로전의 보물 승격은 우리 지역 문화유산의 우수성을 다시 한번 확인하는 계기가 될 것이며, 앞으로도 문화유산의 체계적인 보존과 가치 확산에 행정력을 집중하겠다”고 말했다.

현재 괴산군은 국가지정유산 20건, 도지정유산 54건, 등록유산 3건 등 풍부한 문화 자산을 보유하며 ‘역사와 전통이 살아있는 도시’로서의 입지를 공고히 하고 있다.
